Is STEM a class that takes place during the day or an after-hours program?

SCM STEM is an academic (graded) elective class that takes place during the grade-level elective period. Unlike other electives, this one is a semester long rather than a single quarter.

Since Band takes place during the elective period, can students in Band still be in STEM.

Yes! SCM has a special period designed for Band members that would like to take STEM. For them, STEM takes place during their lunch/directed studies period. Band STEM students still get lunch but also get to do STEM during that time. An added bonus to this class is that it takes place for the whole year rather than just a sememster.

Why do students need to apply to be in STEM.

SCM STEM is designed to provide a next level for high-achieving, higly motivated students that would like the opportunity to take thier skills and knowledge to the next level. Becasue of the activities in which these studetns participate as well as the tools and equipment they use, it is important that we provide a safe, positive, and productive enviroment.

I'm going into 7th (or 8th) grade but wasn't in STEM before. Can I still be in STEM.

Absolutely! Even though each year students will build on skills learned in previous semesters, students joining STEM in later semesters can easily learn as they go.

How is STEM connected to the SC Robotics Team?

Only students enrolled isn STEM are eligible to participate on the SC Robotics Team. This team competes in BEST robotics and a few other smaller challenges throughout the year. If you are nterested in learning more about the  Robotics Team, we hold an informational meeting each August.
